“We all have an essential self, but if you spend every day chopping up meat on a slab, and selling it by the pound, soon you’ll find you’ve become a butcher. And if you don’t want to become a butcher (and why would you?), you’re going to have to cut right through to the bare bones of your own character in the hope of finding out who you really are. Which bloody hurts.”- Russell Brand

Today I want to talk to you about your soul. In very simple terms we are often split into two parts – our social selves, and our essential souls.

Our social self is the part of us that gets us through life without being put into prison for acting crazy. It helps us manage social situations with the appropriate decorum, and keeps an eye on the rules of life that we need to adhere to. The essential soul is our free spirit, our pure essence. It’s the part of us that gets excited about things and is very responsive to colour, sound, and touch.

We obviously need both of these selves, but sometimes we are too connected with our social self and lose touch with our essential soul.

How do you know if you might be out of touch with your soul?

Have a go at finishing the below sentences with one of the following truthfully: OFTEN, SOMETIMES, RARELY or NEVER:

1)  I feel sure I can solve any problem I encounter _______

2) I have fun _______

3) I laugh out loud _____

4) I enjoy time by myself ________

5) I am fascinated by what I am learning ________

6) Things just seem to work out for me _______

7) I get so into projects that I forget to stop _______

8) I play _______

9) I get excited when it’s time to go to work _______

10) I love my body _______

If you didn’t answer OFTEN to all of the above – then there is an area you can work on to get more in touch with your soul. If you did, what are you doing here? Go & enjoy your fabulous life :o)

To take a step closer to your soul & ask yourself: If I could do one thing today that I woud really enjoy it would be _____________.

Double check it with your social self to make sure it’s not something totally unacceptable – but don’t let the social self rule. If your social self tells you you are being lazy or you ‘should’ do something else – ignore it just this one time. Hug your soul today!
